PhD student Natalie Ayriss has done fabulous work analysing RNA-seq data of cloacal swabs obtained from adult and juvenile kākāpō to explore the virome and antibiotic resistance in the microbiome of this critically endangered species. It was my pleasure to assist Natalie in her investigation, where she found a multitude of AMGs were expressed that are potentially resistant to 32 antibiotic classes, including 18 multidrug classes, in addition to viral contigs belonging to 74 different viral families.
